Self-image has been analyzed by psychologists and philosophers alike for centuries. Even though there are many arguments as to what self-image is exactly, people will agree that it has much to do with how a person feels about him/herself. Some would say that this “image” is really called your self-esteem, meaning how a person feels about themselves in the world. What a person does every day – their job, how they treat others, how attractive they are to others – hinges on their self-image.

We can agree that some people have positive perceptions of themselves, while others do not. It is believed that individuals who have a positive perception of themselves might have been told they are good, or useful. While there are those who are constantly told, they are not good enough or useful, could develop a negative perception of themselves. Let’s look at four main ways people can improve their self -image.

1. Feel better about yourself. Another definition of self-image is how you view or feel about yourself. If others do not seem to enjoy a person’s company, that person may develop a poor image of themselves. If other people do not find a person attractive, that person may suffer from the poor image of themselves. People often put too much emphasis on what others think about them. Let me say that again… people often put too much emphasis on what others think about them. It is important to remember that your self-image will change throughout your lifetime. You will begin to depend less about what others think about you as you mature and find hobbies and social groups that accept you. Moreover, more importantly, once you learn to accept yourself.

2. Accept yourself. People’s perception change as they become more educated. Learning a skill or find out more about the world can have a positive impact on a person’s self-esteem. Your self-image needs to be nurtured. Everyone feels less than perfect sometimes. However, most people recover and go on with their lives. But some people cannot let go of these bad feelings as easily. Their expectation of themselves is so unrealistic, they can defeat themselves, therefore, creating a defeated mindset.

3. Don’t compare yourself. Unrealistic comparisons to others can be dangerous. Comparing yourself to others, puts the focus on the wrong person. You can control one life—yours. We waste precious energy focusing on other peoples’ lives rather than our own. Your gifts and talents and successes and value are entirely unique to you and your purpose in this world. They can never be adequately compared to anyone else.

4. Believe in yourself. Jerry Gillies once said, “The strongest single factor in prosperity consciousness is self-esteem: believing you can do it, believing you deserve it, believing you will get it.” You can download a copy of my free eBook called Empowering Grace to learn how you can be empowered spiritually to accomplish the purpose for your life.
